The live theatre entertainment available in Zug is varied and of high quality; however, most of it is in the German language. As lighthearted musical productions in the English language in Zug are rare, the objective of The English Theatre Group of Zug is to fill this gap with the production of musicals which are easy to understand even to an audience not totally fluent in English. The group's first show in 1987 was Guys and Dolls, followed by Chicago, again to full Loreto houses. The success motivated us to move to the Casino in Zug where the musical Carousel was performed in 1989. Despite the more august surroundings four performances were supported favourably both by the critics and the public. The Pajama Game and Finian's Rainbow followed.

In the Lorzensaal Theatre we staged The Fantasticks and - as a novelty for Zug - the first typical British panto Cinderella before Christmas. (If you are not really sure what an English pantomime is follow this link!) This was followed by the musical Snoopy and a second panto, Ali Baba. Our tenth show, South Pacific, took us back to the Theater Casino Zug, followed by Working, another panto Jack and the Beanstalk, and the musical Kiss me, Kate in 1997.

1998 was a very busy year. We produced our first play The Art of Dining in April, Sondheim's musical Company in September and the pantomime Mother Goose in December. The 1999 production was Oklahoma! In 2000, we put on The Diary of Anne Frank in March and Into the Woods in September.

Kurt Weill's Threepenny Opera closed on September 14th 2002. In December of 2002, our members were involved in many of the productions at the One Act Play Festival in Baar. In June 2003 we put on an Old Time Music Revue, with dinner, at the Lorzensaal in Cham.

 Sleeping Beauty a Pantomime was put on at the Dorfmatt in Rotkreuz in January 2004. Since then, we have produced two further musicals, The Piper in November 2005 and Inside Out which was produced in Langnau am Albis in 2005 and again in Cham in January 2006.

To celebrate 20 years of the English Theatre Group of Zug, we decided to put on a famous Broadway musical in the Casino. And we chose Guys and Dolls – possibly for the very same reasons that prompted our founders to choose this as our first show in 1987.

In September 2007 we and the Big Band Zug put on a show called a Feast of Musical Contrasts in the Lorzensaal in Cham. A music revue with a difference! The show was accompanied by a 3 course meal.

In May 2009 we put on the renowned Oscar Wilde play The Importance of being Earnest in the Burgbachsaal in Zug.

In December 2009, after 4 years of no pantos we put on a traditional British pre Christmas show, the well loved Aladdin and his Magic Lamp for the first time in a great theatre in the Kantonal School in Menzingen.
